Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: Tony Blair and the Mars Hotel THOUGHT EXPERIMENT

Well, AltheaRose, who among us knows where all our stuff ended up over the years? And, truth be told, who can really say where all the stuff we now have on hand came from?

So for the techies on our forum, and you know who you are, lets see a CAD reversal, see attachments.

Or could somebody out there try the selfie in the mirror thing?

Hmmm, actually I know where it is right now (in storage in the US with my other stuff, since I live overseas); and I know where it's from and when (a record store, 1978).

But I wasn't referring to the image of the Mars Hotel with the "Martian" writing. ClashCity had said that he thinks the image below, which is on a bootleg LP of 8/13/75, is also on the Mars Hotel inside cover (and might have been taken from there for the bootleg. Hence the lack of Mickey.)

I'd said that I don't think the album had an inside cover, although a later CD reissue might have (and might have used the image too).

That's how it came up. I was just trying to check it out when I ran into the Tony Blair thing.

Here's the image I mean again for anyone who DOES have an original Mars Hotel LP easily accessible. I assume this came out right after the show; at any rate, I'd have gotten it in the late '70s or very early '80s (before any Mars Hotel reissue on CDs existed):

The Mars Hotel record I used to have did not have anything similar to that in it. - Yes I miss that record, along with a lot of other things from that period of my life.

So, if you google "74 DEAD" you find the pic is used in promo materials for concerts PRIOR to MH release...thus, perhaps some PR issued pic for just such PR use? It is in concert ads, news write ups, etc., etc., such as the attached article...

Thank you, detective Tell! I can see the drawing was from a photo used pre-MH (as in your clip re the 5/14/74 show), and the drawing was also used on concert photos in summer '74. It seems like both probably came from the Dead's publicist. When you work for a newspaper and there's a concert, you get a press packet with glossy photos to use; the band pic must have been from that, and the drawing probably was too. (No reason a concert promoter would go to the trouble of making a drawing from an official photo.) Hence the image's use by Official Dead on the CD reissue mentioned by ClashCity.

And all these years I'd thought the drawing was some nice fan art!

Mystery solved :-)

It was a "fun" project; like you, I knew it very well, and I kept thinking, I know it from somewhere other than the bootleg (I had that on tape and never bought the album). I think I may have seen it via the stuff they were sending from RRecords, like all the demo releases, little 45 sized LP samples, blah, blah, blah, but I dunno...nonetheless, I think we have a solid case for how it originated.
